While the process I use is relatively new in glass, having been developed in the mid-80s, it is based on the thousands year old tradition of bronze casting. I pour liquid molten glass into carefully prepared sand molds.
A carving is made of the shape to be cast. This form is then pressed into specialty sand, making a mold. Then and a thin layer of colored powdered glass is laid down to color the surface of the casting. I use all recycled glass from various sources and melt it down. At 2,000 degrees, the liquid molten glass is poured into the sand mold.
After the glass is poured, hot torches are used on the exposed surface of the glass to prevent it cooling too quickly. When the glass reaches about 900 degrees, much of the sand is cut away. The glass is then hand-carried to a special heat controlled oven. It then cools in there for six days or more before cracking open the mold to see what is revealed.
Each piece of glass is then finished off with a custom-made steel base.
