Sisters: Relationships are a common theme throughout my work. Sisters or friends? The literal relationship is unimportant. The closeness is clear. Proximity and the willingness to be vulnerable in a shared moment is what is important. The exchange of secrets and being present for each other is what sisterhood is all about.
Beginning with a charcoal sketch I create my images using layers and layers of fabric. I call the process “textile mosaic”. To have the mosaic effect every small piece of cloth sits next to another piece. I use a multi-step archival adhesive applied with a brush. Every piece of cloth is added one at a time. All the fabric is hand cut. The cloth I use is cotton and silk, only natural fibers. Using vintage, recycled and hand dyed fabrics I utilize a variety of pattern size and colors to create light, pattern, depth and texture.
