Under the Hat
Under The Hat: The tilt of her head and the beauty of the contemplative expression hold your attention and peak your curiosity. The beach is not just a place to frolic, but also to reflect on the world. The ocean in the distance and the breeze in her hair. She has her secrets and she’s keeping them “Under the hat."
Beginning with a charcoal sketch I create my images using layers and layers of fabric. I call the process “textile mosaic”. To have the mosaic effect every small piece of cloth sits next to another piece. I use a multi-step archival adhesive applied with a brush. Every piece of cloth is added one at a time. All the fabric is hand cut. The cloth I use is cotton and silk, only natural fibers. Using vintage, recycled and hand dyed fabrics I utilize a variety of pattern size and colors to create light, pattern, depth and texture.
